If you get a young ig, that cage should last a year-- certainly long enough for you to design and build your own cage (you don't need to spend $1000 either)
Please think about adopting a juvenile(if you plan to use the smaller cage first) or adult because there are so many that have been abandoned and need good homes. A lot of people on the forum here rescue iguanas, make sure they are healthy, then adopt them out to good owners for free.
There are many cage designs out there-- some made of pvc pipe and rubber coated wire, some of wood and glass, some of plexiglass, melamine, etc. Perhaps others will post some ideas they have used.
