What if you took the old cage apart, disinfected it and sealed all the wood? I have never had a mite problem so Ican't be much help, sorry. I would think there would be a way to get rid of them, building a new cage seems like a pain.
Good luck Shelby & Myyaa
: Hi everyone, this is my first time here, i lurked around for a while reading messages, and I have to say it seems like all you guys really know [and love] your igs, and know your stuff too.
: I have a female ig, her name is Jane, she's about 4 years old, I don't know exactly, i got her about two years ago from a guy who couldn't care for her no more. She's about 4 feet, greenish/brownish/orange, and shy (she's been like that ever cinse I got her). I love my ig and I tried to care for her as much as I can, but I’m not a pro I don't know a lot of stuff, I got mostly everything from books.
: Which brings me to my problem.... MITES, f*&(&)*g, little sh*ts!!!!
: I CAN'T get rid of them, I threw away my first cage (which I've built) because of them, and I got them again!!! F**K!!! God knows, I've tried pet strips, chlorine/water, some spray my vet gave me (I forgot the name), but nothing helps. It seems like they're gone, but then they appear again.
: Well, my situation now is like this: I've just moved in my new house, which is clean of mites for now, Jane is with me in the clean cage, after staying in the vet hospital for mites treatment for a few days, so now she's clean too. Her big cage is sitting in the storage. So now I have two choices: 1. Try to disinfect the cage again. 2. Built or buy a new one.
: The problem with the cage, is that, the cage is huge, about 7'/5'/5', all wood (with a lot of cracks), carpet and wire and plexiglas, in other words a lot of places for mites to crawl into and lay eggs, so I just don't know if I can get them out. As far as building a new one - I got no time, I work too much. Buying a new one - I would, for the right price, but it seems like most of those cages available on the net are worthless especially for the igs. I have to decide soon though, the cage Jane is in now, is just a large bird cage, so as you'll understand I cant keep her there too long, so I have to decide soon.
: PLEASE give some suggestions on what should I do??? I just have to be sure mites are gone for good this time, if I can't get rid of them ,I will have to give my ig away, it will brake my heart, but I just can't watch her suffer, but I would much rather keep her, mites free...
: What should I do? Try to clean the old one, or buy a new one? Where is the good places to look for a good cage. Or maybe you guys can give me some tips on building a new cage, as I said I did it once and it took me too much time... so, I just don't know.
: Anyway, I will greatly appreciate any feedback and suggestions and sorry for such a long post.
: Thanks everyone.
: Alex
