As has already been pointed out, before any "training" can be attempted the first thing that must obtained is trust. If the animal does not trust you, there will be no bond and any attemtps at "training" will be lost.

Once you have established a bond of trust between the iguana and you, it is possible to teach them to do certain things. A good example of this is potty training -although it can be a frustrating and long process, it possible to teach an iguana to go to the bathroom where you want it to. Friends of ours have even taught their iguana to not only use a human toilet but to flush when he is finsihed.

Iguanas seem to "learn" a behavior by watching it repeatedly. We have had Mel for just about six months, she now recognizes her name and will come when called -assuming she is not too busy getting into whatever she has found so interesting. In addition to recognizing her name, she also knows the words "no" and "stop it" -if she is doing something wrong and we say "Mel no!" she will stop most of the time. When my husband calls her and pats his hands on his legs, she will go trotting over to him and climb up his body onto his shoulder.

I think that "training", comes with time and repeadative action. It's similar to a dog however iguanas do not respond to the same stimuli. Iguanas definetly seem to have a mind of their own and do things in their own time. Just be patient and repeat whatever action you are trying to teach him/her over and over again until the ig seems to understand it. Hand feeding is a great way to establish a bond between you and your iguana. We also use bath time as a way to socilize -we stay in the bathroom with them and engage in water play. Let your iguana set the pace for socilization -if he/she seems to be getting annoyed then it's time to stop.

Good luck!
