The problem is not fresh figs, just when they go bad. I don't remember where I saw this ( will try to find itagain ), but when they go bad they can produce a toxin very similar to cyanide. I even think that I read it in a medical journal a lot of years ago and it was a directed towards humans. However, the thing is that it shouldn't be a real problem, since we would not like to either eat or give this to someone, as they really don't look good at that point!
