DAVENTRY EXPRESS (Daventry, UK) 02 March 01 Gusher Iguana Tale A Hit On Worldwide Web
Rex the iguana from Daventry has demonstrated the power of the internet when it comes to making the world a smaller place.
The Gusher's website recently featured a tale of how Rex had a lucky escape when he nearly set his owner Richard Keeling's home on fire.
The 3 foot lizard had pushed paper into his tank's heater and it started smouldering, setting off the smoke detectors in Mr Keeling's flat in Laureate House, Daventry. Luckily a neighbour alerted firefighters and the problem was dealt with safely.
The story was spotted by an American who was surfing the net and has an expert interest in keeping iguanas as pets. Michael Dillon, from Manchester in New Hampshire, USA, contacted the Daventry Express asking if we could put him in touch with Mr Keeling.
Mr Keeling, a 27-year-old electrical cable tester, said: "It's amazing isn't it. I'd heard of these groups in America called herpetological societies, and their specialist magazines, but you can't get hold of them over here. I'd be happy to talk to him."
In his e-mail to the Daventry Express, Mr Dillon said: "I am a member of several herpetological societies in the United States and take in sick and abused iguanas in my spare time.
"I am going to be making a presentation to one of the major pet chains here and I am extremely interested in knowing what Mr Keeling used for an enclosure heat source that started the problem.
"Rex appears to be an exceptionally large iguana and I'd love to know more about him."
