In Reply to: How does everyone feel about feeding pellets? posted by Lisette on February 28, 2001 at 13:40:34:

*why* does your vet think your ig should be eating pellets???? i mean, what nutrient in particular does s/he feel your ig is not getting???

i personally think commercial ig-pellets and/or alfalfa pellets are a waste of money + time ...

1) not many igs *willingly* eat pellets ~ it's a totally UN-natural form of food for them + it comes down to a battle of wills as far as "will the ig ever eat them or not?" ...

2) alfalfa is actually rather high in protein and even tho it *is* plant protein, too much of it is still hard on the kidneys ...

3) while it's *not* easy, it *is* possible to get a healthy diet from fresh greens/vegies ...

4) ever *read* the label of these so-called wonderful pellets???? not what i wanna put into my baby ...

5) *any* kind of pet food and/or supplements are *not* as regulated as products intended for human consumption ~ (it's something *i'm* paranoid about ~ hey ~ look at "Hot Rocks"!) ... i'd much rather use something that i'm reasonably certain is safe + that (unfortunately) means something that has passed inspection by the FDA ... (another reason i'd recommend something like TUMS for calcium rather than "reptile supplements" )

6) possibly the vet was considering caloric content + that's why s/he recommended pellets?? there *are* vegies that have a higher calorie count than greens that you can add to the salad ... (sweet potato ...)

7) a variety of vegies is prob'ly cheaper than pellets and will be alot more appreciated ...

ummmmm ... i think i may have ranted just a leeeetle bit???? *grin* (i had a lonnnnnnnnnnnnng + b***** day at work ...)

best wishes!!!!
Bon.
