All I can do is offer you my condolences. Hopefully you and your family will be able to move on.
Good luck, and don't blame yourself.

: : We will be having a little funeral for Merlin today. I would like to share with you what happened so that anyone building their own cage will not make the same mistake that we made. The top of our cage was of the fine metal screen in a frame. It was strong enough to support the basking lights but apparently not strong enough to keep the cats from collapsing one side of the top portion and getting in the enclosure. This was a temporary setup. We making the cage out of one of the kid's closets. Eventually it would have had two fronts doors that opened up. Right now we didn't want him to have the entire closet while we were training him to get used to us. We won't be getting another ig right now. One we need to redesign the top of the cage with the strength necessary to keep animals out, not just keeping Merlin in. Also, during that time we can heal a little bit so that we can give the next ig the love and attention he/she deserves.

: We had thought Merlin was safe because he was in our daughter's bedroom and we kept the door closed so the dogs and cats could not go in. My son feels real bad as he was the one who went in and turned off Merlins light that night. He thought he had closed the door. We have since found out that sometimes that door doesn't completely shut. Our daughter, where Merlin's cage was, would have probably heard what was going on, but she was spending the night at a friend and not in her bedroom that night.

: If you are building a cage, make sure that it is strong enough for keeping undesireables out, as well as keeping your ig in. We are looking at the larger, stronger cage wire and putting the metal screen wire on top of that along with wood supports for the top. This should keep the jungle cats out if they every manage to get in that room again.

: I also want to thank everyone for all there support. I really needed it yesterday.

: Joan
