In Reply to: How do you potty train an iguana? posted by Archbishop on February 21, 2001 at 16:53:17:
That should make it much easier to train him.
By saying 'potty train', I assume you mean to train him to poop in the tub. If not, substitute the word tub to wherever you want to train him to go, but decide NOW, before training him, where you want him to do forever. Once they're set in their ways - Katy bar the door....they can be really stubborn. (My iguana actually does use the toilet and it is *wonderful* not to have to deal with that mess when dealing with a five foot lizard who poops more than a normal human. *grin*
Each day, at the same time, take him to soak in the bathtub filled with several inches of warm water. (Only up to the middle of his chest until he gets used to this routine.) This should stimulate the response for him to defecate. As soon, as he does his duty, praise him, coo over him and make him feel like he just invented the wheel. Let out the water. Refill the tub and let him soak, all the while rubbing him and telling him how wonderful he is.
Take him out after a good soak and massage a put him back under his basking light to get warm.
Remember to disinfect the tub each time.
The most important thing to remember is do NOT break your pattern. Watch your iguana for 'cues' that he needs to go, and take him to the tub - or wherever you want im to go. Usually they, have their own schedule, but they stick to it day after day. It's their humans that mess up their schedules - we forget, get preoccupied or miss their 'poop cues'.
Best of luck!
