: : I have had my Ig (Reptar) about a week now and I carried him/her to the vet today. She (the vet) specilizes in reptiles and she was very pleased with our living conditons and diet for Reptar. She did, however, recommend giving Reptar some dog food. I told her what I had read on the internet about that matter and she agreed with it. Then she went on to say that the only reason she is suggesting it is because she was concerned that he may be too skinny and feels Reptar may need a little "jump start". She recommended just a very tiny bit 2 or 3 times a week just for the next 3 weeks.
: : Reptar also had parisites in his/her fesis and was giving meds for it. I also have a follow-up appointment in 3 weeks.
: : What do you all think? Should I give the dog food? Also I was given some Pure Synergy to give Reptar, does anyone have any input on it? The vet said it was a great supplement.
: : One final note, the vet assured me that there would be no harm in giving the dog food to such a young Ig (appx. 6 months: 3" SVL).
: : Thanks all,

: Mark I wouldn't listen to your veternarian when it comes to dog food or animal protein supplements for your iguana. I fed it to my iguana not know how detrimental the effect would be in the next upcoming years. Iguanas do not eat animal protein in the wild and shouldn't be fed in captivity. You should go out and buy "Green Iguana, The Ultimate Owner's Manual" by James W. Htfield III. This book is awsome to say the least. It costs around 35 bucks and is well worth it. The parisites in your juvenile iguana are normal. When the iguana is hatched it will eat the feces and shell around him. The vet should have fed him a white fluid through the mouth. This will have to be done around 4 or 5 times. I don't know about the extra energy. Should be fine. Repeat don't feed dog food. This is done in central and south america to fatten the iguanas but these iguanas are bred for there meat not longevity. If have any questions will be glad to help you out.
