In Reply to: Why does my iguana bite itself? posted by sari on February 17, 2001 at 23:19:11:
Sari, my iguana did this about a year and a half ago. He bit himself in the thighs, and chewed the last 8 inches of his tail so badly that he lost it. We ended up trying to monitor him all the time, which was, of course, impossible. The wounds did heal. Now, as to why, I am convinced that this is a reaction to stress, which in our case, seemed to coincide with his first breeding season. We varied his routine, and reduced all other stress factors we could, and it passed. Sorry I couldn't be more specific, but I think you will find that stress is the key, and it has many forms. Reflections in glass cause stress. Mites cause stress. Just try to eleminate as much as possible.
Hope this helps, and good luck.
