In Reply to: Why does my iguana bite itself? posted by sari on February 17, 2001 at 23:19:11:
Hello Sari, and welcome. I am glad you are here asking these questions from people who live with iguanas.
Firstly, an iguana charging the glass of its cage is not necessarily normal. It could mean that something in his environment is not to his liking... often it is space. Could he be getting too big for his cage? What size is it, and how big is he? Whatever is bothering him should be corrected, or he could damage himself. Our ig has just started to try to "push" the cage open with his nose, and just putting a strip of black paper across the bottom on the outside stopped him from doing that. We did make sure the temperatures were correct...and the cage is small-room-sized. I'm sure people here will post a couple of links for you to good iguana care sites.
I haven't heard of an iguana biting itself, and I would have him checked over by a qualified herp vet. This would worry me.
Best of luck, and please let us know what happens...especially what has caused the biting when you find out.
Wendy
