Well folks, as spring rolls in, so does the increase of shedding with our iguanas. Some of the key areas to keep an eye on when your iguana is shedding is: The very tip of your iguana's tail. This part of their tail can build up sheds and cause the area to be choked off. Shed ring as some call it, is like having a tourniquet on the iguana's tail, which will cut off the flow to the end of the tail. Brown or Black stripes on their tail seems to be the hardest areas in spotting these rings. So keep an eye focused on this, this spring for any shed that isn't coming off. Another area is by the toes, same thing applies here too, watch for shedding that is not coming off. Spikes can be a big problem with iguanas and should be addressed as soon as possible. If it isn't, they can also build up and in the end choke out the spike. One thing we do when getting spikes to come off is to give them a bath and cover their spikes with a washcloth that's wet. We let this sit on their backs for about 20 to 30 minutes and it really makes large sections of spike shed to come right off. We also recommend NOT to pull too much on any part of the shedding areas, this can be painful for the iguana and is really not required. Shedding should easily come off, if it doesn't then I would recommend checking the humidity levels for your iguana, you may have to boost the levels up more.
We wish everyone's iggy's to have tons of sheds this summer.....it's a good sign of a growing iguana!!
Sincerely,
HD
