A simple X-ray will tell you the stage of egg development. As far as re-absorbing, yes they commonly do this. My thoughts is that it is triggered more by health and age/size, more than a suitable laying site not being present.

2 years ago Phaedra re-absorbed. She was 3 years old at the time. She started re-absorption around the middle of Janurary (several X-rays during the development and subsequent absorbing confirmed the time period)

Last year she laid 41 eggs. She had a nest box exactly like the prior year, but she was (obviously) a year older, and larger. She laid all 41 in one evening over 1.5 hours. It was on January 19. The nesting box contained a 2/3 soil to 1/3 sand mixture - unheated.

This past December she laid 39 eggs over a period of 11 days starting on Dec 16. Most were laid on her basking shelf, only 2 in her box. Changes from last year were that I decided to go with the "recommended" (some resources) sand with a heating pad under the box, controlled by a thermostat.

Each year the frantic digging behaviour ceased approximately 5-6 days prior to laying.

Things I draw from this: No set schedule year to year, and don't mess with what works!

(I do suggest the X-ray though)
