Romaine is "ok" as a filler. I do not use it. Sounds like your book is outdated. Try getting Iguanas For Dummies book. Modern useful info.
Please do not feed your ig lettuce of any kind.
Try collard greens, mustard greens, green beans, dandelion leaves, watercress, butternut squash, spinach....
