Thanks, Tammy. This is a very good suggestion, but I would make one important request of all of you who want to write to Petco on behalf of this poor iguana: I ask that you don't write mean, nasty or otherwise angry letters to Petco. Doing so might only fuel the manager's stubborness to let me adopt her out in the future. I want to remain in good terms with them so that they'll consider me as a teammate trying to help them out.
Afterall, they *did* rescue her from an even worse life than she has now. So, they have at least taken her "from the fire into the frying pan", so to speak. (Even if they only see her as a quote "floor display model which has improved iguana sales greatly and gotten the kids more interested.")
I'd much prefer it if you just wrote that you heard about it on an Iguana Forum, and that you're very concerned that the store bring up the living conditions in the proper way so that the iguana will have a good quality of life there.
So far, what little changes they have made for her are pretty unconsequential. She still has not got adequate lighting (because it's so far from her body she can't absorb any of the UV rays) and her diet is still poor, (she acted SO hungry when I went in yesterday and fed her some collard greens) she sits on poop covered repti bark all day long, has no basking spot whatsoever, and no branches to climb/sit on that are sturdy enough to hold her body weight.
If you do write to them, please mention the things that are vital to iguana care, and tell them of the importance of such things like having the UV lighting within 12 inches of the iguana, feeding the proper diet, and providing her a place to climb up out of her own waste and urates. (Like having a branch, shelf, or other basking spot provided for her.)
You also might want to mention the sticker on their iglet tank which says to feed juvenille iguanas CRICKETS until they reach 18" long! Oh, and also, that their store pamphlet (published by Petco itsself) said to feed adult iguanas only three times a week. You may suggest to them that they get their facts straight, and see to it that the literature they put out concerning iguana care is correct and beneficial to iguanas nationwide.
Perhaps if some others got involved and wrote of their concern, more good might come of the situation. This was a great suggestion, Tammy! Thanks for caring.
Here's the Petco address:
Petco Store 491
85 S. State
Orem, Utah
84058
The manager's name is D. Andrew.
Thanks in advance for all of you who take the time to write a letter of concern. Here's to hoping they will be so bombarded by concern from all of you that they will feel she's not worth their trouble anymore, and will eventually concede and let me adopt her out! Then all we have to do is find her a good home...but I suppose we can worry about that when/if the time comes.
Much thanks again,
Diana
