While I agree that paint can be scratched and may expose wood, our enclosure (wood frame with coated wire) is painted (only the frame) with high quality latex paint. (both primer and topcoat) This has worked well for us. If you paint, use nothing other than latex, as the emissions from latex are much more benign than oil based paints. Also, use exterior latex only. (Much tougher) We let our frame cure in the sun for 2 weeks before the ig went into it. We've had no problems, including scratches or chips. Hope this helps.
