My Stevie never had any spikes....well, no wait--one popped out when he was about 7 (lived to 10 - 11 yrs old)...he also was an off- color, looked similar to your Double-D. Never affected his health that I knew of,...I got him when he was about 1 yr old, and he had no spikes and he was blind, I don't know the history on how all that happened.
