What a terrible thing for you. Thank goodness he had love for his final days.
I am really embarrassed to say this, but seeing as it is just today that this happened.....um, are you absolutely certain he is gone? Silly as it sounds, maybe you might want to keep him heated for the day?? I am NOT trying to sound ridiculous or place false ideas and hopes - but I have a story I've told a few times. Seeing as there is no readily apparent cause of death I feel I must tell it to you.
One of our lizards died, and had no heartbeat for five hours, according to the vet. My girls were so heartbroken they wanted to bring her home for a proper burial. As we were leaving, the Dr. embarassingly said he felt an obligation to let us know there have been one or two rare occurences of seemingly dead lizards 'waking up'. We took ours home, and due to two crying daughters I warmed her on an old heat rock (well she *was* dead and it was the fastest way to warm her!) and slowly massaged her and sprayed her. But let's face it - when you see a dead being, you just know it. I was just doing it for the girls' sake - so they would know we had done all we could for her. After a while, she took an almost imperceptable breath. We thought we were imagining things, but over the next 45 minutes she did indeed 'wake up'. Believe me, the tears were just a'flowing at the vet's too!! Now this initial 'death' was brought on by stress and shock, so it's just a teeny tiny thought.....that maybe it wouldn't hurt to leave your girl heated. Although our baby had been buried lightly in cedar shavings in a box and stuck on shelf at about 68 degrees, I am sure it was the heat that did it.
At risk of sounding like a nut -- my Ally ALSO did the same thing. I woke up one day to find her dead. Stretched out stiff with her eyes open even. Now she is a ctenosaura (club-tailed iguana) but a lizard story is a lizard story. I poked her, prodded her, shot water directly into her eyes etc. and that thing was as dead as a doornob. Later in the day I scheduled an autopsy. But I didn't like her feeling so cold and stiff, so I put her in a plastic dishpan with a hot water bottle and all wrapped in good soft cozy towels. Imagine what a complete idiot I felt like when I had to call the vet back to say that she too had 'come back to life' eight hours later. Fortunately he knows me well enough to believe me.
I thought at first that either I had really supernatural babies, or obviously I didn't know a dead lizard when I saw one. People here on the forum tried to find answers too, or any evidence on the net of other people experiencing this. Well, one other person was evetually found. With great stress, hers will 'play dead' - she thinks to look less appetizing. Or it could be a type of withdrawal?
Anyways, with the extensive communication of the internet and to only find two people who have experienced this, makes it an extremely rare phenonemom. However....if it's as simple as keeping the heat on, why not try?
I am sorry this was so long, but a message like "keep the heat on" needs a lot of explaining!
And I agree - I would definitely have an autopsy done too. It could be very helpful to yourself and others. Best wishes, Wendy.
