My condolences, George. Our largest is a 3 yr old and we can't imagine losing her. Fortunately, she's as healthy as a horse. As far as the cause of death, it's impossible to know without the autopsy. Since you only had him for a short time and the shop has little background knowledge it would be a VERY rough guess at best. Diet, mites, parasites, infection, kidney problems, disease, etc could ALL have contributed. You may have been the person he was waiting for just so he could have a better place than a pet shop to lay down one last time.
It's not at all "crazy" to want an autopsy and in fact may ultimately help out the rest of the iguana world in some small or large way depending on the results. The New Hampshire Herp Society president just had an autopsy done on a monitor that he rescued that, sadly, didn't survive. There are findings of some form of neurological disorder in monitors so maybe that will help in research.
As far as disinfecting the cage, a mild to moderate bleach solution and a good rinse should work fine. Just let it air out a day or two before anyone else moves in...If/when you're ready to take in another, give us a holler. If you need help locating another one for rescue or adoption we'll do what we can.
