DAVENTRY EXPRESS (UK) 01 February 01 Rex The Iguana Sparks Fire Alert
Reptilian antics could have ended in disaster when a pet iguana in Daventry came close to starting a house fire.
The cold-blooded pyromaniac caused a full-scale alert with the fire services, who rushed out two crews to a Laureate House address when a smoke alarm alerted a neighbour.
Fire fighters found green iguana Rex engulfed by smoke when they broke into his owner's flat at around 2.30pm on Friday (Jan 26). Fortunately, the emergency - caused when the lizard pushed paper into his tank's heater - was soon dealt with.
And now owner Richard Keeling, aged 27, is left thankful his well-loved animal didn't burn the building down.
He said: "I got a call at work to say there had been an accident and I rushed home.
"I was surprised Rex survived because everything started in his cage. There were a few scorch marks in the tank but the lizard seemed his normal self when I arrived back."
Three-and-a-half-year-old Rex, who is more than 3ft long but should grow to almost twice his current size, mainly eats salad and Mr Keeling, an electrical cable tester, says he is very tame and easy to handle.
Iguanas need UV lighting, vitamin supplements and have to be heated to around 100 degrees Fahrenheit for around 12 hours a day.
Fire service spokesman Paul Greenwood said: "There was no fire when the crew broke in, just smoke. It was lucky the neighbour heard the alarm."
