I think that it all depends from person to person, some people are irresponsible and just want to get a reptile and an iguana is the cheapest alternative (purchase price). They throw in a bit of lettuce here, some fruit there, and they think they are the best owner, just because the animal (in their standards) looks healthy, and is SO tame so fast(when the iggy is actually very ill).
Some people on the other hand, are determined enough to research the animal before or after acquiring the animal, and take on full responsibility of what they have gotten themselves into, are devoted to the health of the animal, and love the animal.
To sum it all up, like I said earlier, it depends on the person. An iguana was my first herp, and I couldn't think of a better pet. Although thats an iguana owners opinion!:) And boy oh boy did it suck me into herping for the rest of my life!:) Now I'm planning on getting a few snakes, and probably another IG. MY father says that I'll never get married with all of these "things" in my house, and that I'll scare everyone away! LOL
