Welcome Jason,
By continuing your research on caring for an iguana, you will find out that iguana's will eat not only good food items, but items that can be deadly to them as well. Such as wood chips, small pebbles (rocks), coins and the list goes on and on. If you are going to allow your iguana to free roam, you will need to make sure all small items are removed from your iguana's reach. This includes poisonous plants, which there are many that are dangerous to an iguana.
Small items can and will cause blockage in the digestion track of your iguana.
Free roaming is great for your iguana, it gives them space to move around and get more accustom to it's surroundings. There is a concern that should be understood when allowing your iguana to free roam and that is UVB exposure. Winter time is the worst time for iguanas that are in the colder states, because they only have access to UVB's from a light fixture. This limits the needed UVB's and unless your iguana spends 3/4's of the day within 18" of the UVB light, it's not getting enough UVB's to process it's food properly.
A way of aiding in proper exposure, is to provide direct sunlight during the spring, summer and fall months, whenever temperatures outside are above 75 to 80 degrees. The more outside time your iguana has, the better it is for the winter months by building it's body system up and giving it the needed boost to get through the winter months.
Something to remember about providing direct sunlight, always provide shaded areas for your iguana. If the temperatures get above 90 degrees on a sunny day, you can overheat an iguana, if you don't provide shade for him/her. UVB levels outside in the shade are still very high. At mid-day UVB levels can be over 100 in the shade, which is much more than the 5.0 provided by fixtures. Also, remember to spray/mist an iguana that is outside for any length of time.
Well, I could go on and on.....with more information but.....if I did that, you wouldn't have any more questions to post!! LOL
Again, welcome to the forum.
