In Reply to: How it went at Petco today (long) posted by Diana on January 23, 2001 at 20:04:21:

: Things didn't go as I had wanted them to, but I'm not without hope. Basically, I still don't know where she's going to end up.

: I spoke with the head manager at Petco this morning and he said that they still aren't going to part with her, but that he is going to call a meeting with his staff and his "reptile specialist" to see if they can improve her life there at the store. He said he'd read through the material I left with them yesterday, give it some thought, meet with his staff, and call me in two days.
: He said if the staff thinks she would be better off going to a home rather than staying at the store, and if they thought that she'd be too much work for them to care for properly, then maybe he'd let her go to me. But it didn't sound too hopeful. I think I have a 40/60 chance of getting her out of there. (40% in my favor, that is.)

: So, while the thought of her living out her life there at the store is very very distasteful to me, I have to recognize that at lesat her life will be improved drastically. If Petco will do all I told them they need to do, then she should have a semi- decent set-up very soon. They said they'll get her some UV lighting, a heating pad, hopefully a bigger cage, and some improved hygiene. He also said he'd have his vet take a look at her broken rib (he was unaware she had a broken rib at all until I carried her over to him and made him feel it through her belly skin). He said, "Are you sure it's broken? My reptile specialist hasn't said anything to me about it." But once he felt it for himself, he agreed that it was definiately broken, an needed to be looked at by a vet. So at least, she'll get medical attention.

: NOW...
: Lest you think I'm going to settle down now and say, "Oh well. At least I tried." and hang up my hat, let me say that I am going to ride their behinds all the way!

: I'm going to go in to the store regularly and MAKE sure they set things up for her properly. I'm going to demand that they either comply with her needs, and if they don't follow through on what they've said they will do for her, I WILL inform the newspapers, the news, and the SPCA.

: So, in short, I guess this means that for the time being anyway, she is going to stay there, but she's going to start getting treated right, or I will step in again and take things further. I refuse to let her live a miserable life.

: Some of you have written to me and suggested calling the animal agencies etc., but I do think that I will use that as a last resort. As it stands, we're on pretty good terms with each other, and I still have a shot at getting to take her home. I'm worried that if at this point, I pull out my "guns" and make threats of going public with this etc. then things might sour. I would prefer to only go that route it they won't comply with what they've said they will. But, having said this, I'm still totally open to ideas--if any of you think I am going about it in the wrong way. Please, make suggestions to me, and tell me what you think I ought to do. You're my biggest support group, and I value your opinions.

: Okay, Just one more thing and then I'll shut up. I just have to mention this to you guys...it's pretty wild. Hear me out.

: The manager offered me a job today on the spot! He wants me to be new "Reptile Specialist" there at Petco. He said he could tell I "knew my stuff" and that I have passion and love for animals etc, and that I'd be good with the public.

: Listen to this: I have NO knowledge about any other reptiles other than Green Iguanas! But he wanted to hire me today to be his "Reptile Specialist"...that tells me a lot about the qualifications of the other "specialists" there. What a crock! They probably got to be "reptile specialists" because they owned a snake when they were 12 years-old or something! They're no more of a reptile specialist than I am, and I'm no more a reptile specialist than a neurosurgeon! But he didn't care. He just thought I'd be good for sales because he said I'm warm and friendly, I seemed knowledgeable, and I'd be good with the public. Yippy. Then it could me ME who has to sell baby Igs to punk kids who know nothing about them and couldn't care less about learing more about their care. No thanks!
: Just for the hour I was there for today (holding the iguana I had hoped to adopt) I persuaded two people out of getting iguanas for their little boys who thought they "looked cool", by telling them about all the specialized care they need. I told them that they're a very expensive pet, and are fragile and need a lot of care. Hopefully, that's two less dead Igs for the future.

: Okay. End of rant. I feel better now that I've gotten it all out. To those of you who are now out of breath from my long post, sorry! I'll try not to make them be so long in the future. I just had a lot to say tonight; I had a long day.

: Thanks again for being there...all of you.
: Diana
