Ok, since Mr D (for those of you that haven't guessed I am his wife -usualy post under the s/n Mrs D but was recently dubbed ig chick and it kinda stuck :) ) decided to throw this out here I have a few things to say.
First of all, whether we like it or not these stores are in business to make money and so (sadly I might add) when anyone makes a suggestion on how to cure an ill keep in mind that it will probably be ignored if it means a loss of $ to the store in question. So, while we probably won't be able to convince them to stop selling oh let's say hot rocks, we might be able to convince them that by placing a warning sign near them and telling customers that in order to make them safe they need to purchase a regluator not only do they assist in making the product safer, they have increased their sale point. Ideal? No. Good start? Yes, I believe it is.
Secondly I don't believe in the "it'll never work" theory. How do we know if we don't try? Sure others have gone before us and failed but we may not be using the same methods or approaches and I can assure you that there is nothing self serving in our desire to see change other than we are quickly running out of room in our relatively newly purchased home to house unwanted, abused and abandoned iggys.
I think, IMHO, it is an absolute that these stores need to stop carrying animals (of any kind) all together. However, we have to show them how their store can still be profitable and possibly more profitable by doing this. We need to show these stores by actions and words that we are not going to continue shopping in their stores until they clean their acts up. When the regional guy found out we have 5 igs and a 55 gallon aquarium, he did some quick math and realized just how much $ they were loosing by us not shopping there. They get approximately $10.00 of emergency sales from us a year when they could be getting well over a thousand in regular sales. We then informed him to multiple that by the hundreds of other who refuse to shop there for the same reasons. It's all about the dollars and cents to these guys. Don't just not shop there for herp supplies, don't shop there for any animal supplies at all (no dog or cat food, no fish food, nothing!).
So, most important is that we hit these stores where it hurts, in the cash register! If they are abusing an animal and won't listen to reason call animal welfare, call the ASPCA, call whomever regulates/licenses pet stores in your area and complain. Follow up on that complaint as well! When you send in your complaint, back it up with well recognized adn respected references. Write an editorial and send it to your local paper. Call the local TV news and tell them you have a great human interest story. Disney's Dinosaurs is coming out on video at the end of the month, since most people associate iggys with dinos (see any old article about iggy sales increasing after the release of Jurassic Park) use that as a tie in! Join your local herp society and as a group make some noise!
BE HEARD!
