NEWSDAY (Long Island) 22 January 01 Iggy And The Chips: Triangle Electronics Group isn't your everyday workplace (Paul Schreiber) {Excerpts}
Iggy's got a job to do, like everybody else at Triangle Electronics Group, and it's not just to look pretty. This leathery green iguana has been put in charge of mood.
"I think she kind of softens the whole office atmosphere for the people who work here," says Chris Cooper, the founder and chief executive of this otherwise-very-serious distributor of computer chips. Cooper considers it inspirational rather than odd to keep a four-foot lizard in the company lunchroom.
"I like to make things seem more homey," Cooper explains. "She's an interesting creature. When you're sitting there eating lunch, you can just watch her, watch her eat. She loves her strawberries. Everybody seems to find it amusing." Iggy is only one of the touches that suggest Triangle is not your ordinary workplace. There also are gray and yellow cockatiels, a sailfish on the conference room wall, a tank with a dozen fish, a carved birdcage from India and a hanging sword and mace. There also is a shirt-and-tie policy, and a chief executive who rarely doffs his jacket. And don't be late.
