: I myself will not give an iguana to anybody I do not think can take care of it .

There have been more than a few occasions when we have said no as well. The trouble with that is that the people we say no to can and have in some cases, just gone out and purchased from a pet store.
We don't say no flat out anymore, we take the opportunity to educate and if the need be scare the heck out of people by giving them in depth cost analysis. Once they see how much it will cost in black and white, many of them change their minds on their own.
We are from the school of thought where we don't "dummy" anything down nor do we offer shortcuts to newbies. That may seem harsh to some but when we are paying vet bills for multiple igs that aren't are own because someone was too lazy or cheap to take the ig in on their own, I think that entitles us to be a little harsh sometimes. However, when we encounter a situation where someone has good intentions but got bad info, we do tend to offer a more friendly helping hand and less of a caustic cold shoulder.
One of the tests we use is to tell someone that we will not adopt to them unless they get a proper enclosure in place first. By proper enclosure I mean complete with UV, baskers, humidity, no chicken wire and no 20 gallon tanks. If someone is willing to go the distance to put together the right enclosure, I'm always more than happy to work with them. This also helps weed out the people who want to adopt on a whim or who have no intention of giving proper care.
I think the most difficult part for us is when we know that the person is giving bad care but feel we can't say anything or else risk loosing the chance to get the ig out of there.
