Just recently when I went into (cough, gasp) PetCO to purchase some ick treatment for our fish, we found a uromastyx in their reptile department. For anyone who is not familiar with uromastyx, they are somewhat similar to an iguana, are desert animals and they need to be kept between 100-120* and in a very dry enclosure. This one was in the regular holding tanks which can get no warmer than 85*.
After months of trying to deal with the store directly on other issues and not getting anywhere, we finally got a responce from corperate and are meeting with them in a few weeks to discuss many things, the treatment of animals is among them.
What distresses me most of all in our particular case is that the regional coordinator for companion animals had NO IDEA that this animal was even in the store! We were told that PetCo does not carry these aniamls and the store was not supposed to even have one. That leads me to wonder if anyone knows what goes on in these stores at all?
We are constantly discouraging people from buying igs in a pet store. Most recently we have taken to carrying a picture of our 4 foot female so that we can show people how large they really get! One of the simplest ways to work within a pet store to discourage others from buying it to see if the store has a bulletin board. I know that most PetCo stores do. Print out a flyer from your local herp society or other good information source and post it on the board! Even if it only reaches a small amount of people, atleast that's something!
I wish you good luck in helping this ig! If there is anything we can do to help, drop us an email. et us know how things work out!
