I had an iguana that used to do kinda the same thing.
I also had a cockateil and cage in my living room, and every time I took my ig out in there, he would immediately journey half way around the living room, leaping from couch to plant to chair, climb up the cage and sit on top. He didn't like the bird at all, but it wouldn't stop him, even if it was already sitting on top the cage. He would sit up there and close his eyes and raise his head up, and the bird of course would walk over and start poking at his toes and pulling his tail.
I knew the bird would hurt him so I would move my ig away, but he'd just go back. Obviously my iggy didn't have "survival instincts". The funniest thing was, he LOVED the cage! He found the doorway and would climb inside and go to sleep in the birds nesting basket!
It all ended when iggy got back at the bird and pooped on him while he slept underneath....poor bird...
