I have had to fight long and hard to reach the ONLY solution to this problem that I could see . Make them illegal to sell ! I have been in Many arguments in pet stores here in Maine everything from "these pellets are all they need for food" to " Iguanas only live 2 years " and my favorite of all time the employee to the guy buying the iguana " The 10 gallon tank package includes all you need for your iguana's whole life except food and they will never outgrow it " For those of you that might not know these " Starter kit's " Contain a 10 gallon fish tank a heat rock a bag of bark a lamp and a 60 watt bulb and sometimes a can of food a place in Portland was even including ceder chips in there kit . The fact is that pet store iguanas live less then 1 year 99 percent of the time . Even when the guy at the store knows what he is doing ( There are A LOT of good people in stores I am not saying all of them ) and the customer has understanding of what he or she is in for all it takes is a girlfriend that does not like it , A move to a new place , A problem that requires a Vet ( I have little understanding why people take dogs cats and god know's what else to the vet but most people will NOT take their Iguanas for a simple checkup once or twice a year ) , A new job that limits there time and so on and so on I have heard all these and many more . I took one in Friday that was three foot long and had been in a fish tank for 2 years and ate mostly green peppers ( I was told he really liked them ) he had a huge abscess on his cheek thumb tip size and he was BROWN . I have no doubt the people that had him liked him but they did not give him the care he needed even with a sore growing on his face they did not take him to the vet . At this time last year I had a room full of iguanas with these and more excuses today I love the fact that I can say I only have THREE . You cant save every iguana no matter how much you want to I know I have tried . The one and only way to stop it is to make selling iguanas in pet stores Illegal in all 50 states . I do not however agree with what happened in NY NY . I think we did a better job here . I understand the people that say they are breed to be pets but if they cant be pets why breed them ?
