IMHO, i think ig's are smart enough to figure it out if YOU can figure out how to explain it to them ... (tho there's still the occasional "attitude" problem .... i for one, don't think iZ's poop smears allllll over are an accident .... *grin*)
i was fortunate enough to be able to catch iZ "in the act" quite frequently when he first moved in and i would simply move him to the accepted poop place and tell him "bathroom" .... at that point he was still small enough to be in his enclosure (6'x4'x5', BTW) and whenever it was time for him to come out and "play", i would take him to the bathroom place first thing, before he got to roam around .... it very quickly got to where he would let us know if he needed to get out and use the bathroom if it was earlier than the "scheduled" trip!
sounds like your ig has your room all day tho .... depending on your schedule and and the time of day you ig likes to "go", i'd try taking him to the designated bathroom spot daily and tell him "bathroom" .... and when he is in the middle of "going" tell him "Good ig, BATHROOM" and repeat "bathroom" so he can figure out what the word means ....
iZ has a litterbox in his room that he uses SOMEtimes, but he still prefers the tub .... i inadvertently taught him that when he was new to our house and constipated and i'd soak him in the tub everynight ..... (he was still young enough that he ate 4-5 times a day and so pooped EVERYday at least once ....) now, if he hasn't used his litterbox in the last 2 days, i put him in the tub first thing when he comes out of his room ..... he will actually line his vent up with the tub drain!!!! he he he .... unless he's in a "MOOD", then he goes on the other end of the tub and smears it all over .... YECH .... (but not very often thank goodness)
a disclaimer: tub-training is NOT the most sanitary thing to do .... and i know grosses some ig-humans out ... i THOROUGHLY rinse and use a bleach solution when iZ is done .... (AND my housemate is ok with this ...)

good luck!!!!
:P + :)
