: I have a few questions about spiney tailed iguanas.
: 1. Is their diet the same as green iguanas?
I would say yes except juviniles a slight bit of protien. I feed my girl like you would a green but I also give her 1% protien in the form of mealworms & crickets and once or twice a year maybe a small mouse.
: 2. Do they get as big green iguanas?
depends what species. Most are considerably smaller. Currently there is about 12 or so species plus add a few subspecies. The largest is similis or pectinata. males of these species getting about 4 ft females 3 total legth. My girl is a similis.
: 3. Do they climb as much as green iguanas?
They do climb almost as well or as well but are also on the ground, The're legs are shorter.
: 4. How else are they different (or alike)?
I think of them as like a green but not as specialized for tree and canopy life. They are more versatile and adaptable and can adapt to dryer and rockier environments in addition the humid. Again according to the various species more or less . I've heard also that they are nastier. However the one that i got ( I caught her as a several week old baby running wild in Florida while on vacation in July 1998) is tame as can be but I've handled her every day since I caught her. There is not much info on these guys. The only book available on them in in German. Mark M. in the ctenosaura forum has a lot of knowledge about them. In my humble opinion this is the smartest and best lizard I have ever seen or had. Hopes this helps
