both males and females can go after each others' throats (uh, dewlaps).
if you get a males, you can expect eggs (as long as he's big enough), and so a small business venture. but, in courtship and the breeding season, males are a bit rough sometimes (once saw a female with a crushed skull!).
Females and females are often ok, but make sure they both get plenty of space, and multiple basking spots. same size = same respect in the animal mind.
as long as you observe them closely it's ok for both. personally, it'd be cool to have clutches every year! you decide, but it is not really a shot in the dark as it sounds.
IMPORTANT!
put the new acquisition in quarantine for a couple of weeks, to make sure it doesnt have endo/external parasites, bacteria, and the like.

: Anybody have advice on boarding iggs together? I have a 48 inch female. Could I adopt another female or a male? Or is it basically a shot in the dark whether they will get along.
