In Reply to: Bug's vet visit.... and crystalized urates....... posted by John on November 20, 2000 at 16:22:40:

: I took Bug to his new herp vet today, and what a gratifying experience! I had used a vet in the past who was not a herp vet, and didn't like the results, but the new herp vet is wonderful! I was grilled for 15 minutes on care, heat, light, diet, caging, etc. (As should be) Bug got the exam of his life. Fecal exam, blood work, heart, liver, gut, and especially kidney. the vet palpated kidneys externally, and internally. His cal-ph ratio is normal, urates are normal, kidneys small (no enlargement or hard places) and normal, weight right on the money for size, everything good. We did worm him again, though, because the fecal showed still some evidence of pinworms. (Had been wormed some time ago) Diana, as to the gritty component in the urates, it is uric acid crystals, and Harry's Dad was pretty much on the money with what he found. Even though Bug was not dehydrated, and gets plenty of water, one really dry day (low humidity)can cause this. Humidity is so important for this. Diet can also be a cause, but the vet said she would not change anything in his diet. Bottom line is, this may happen occasionally, but as long as it is occasional, not too much cause for alarm. Keep the humidity high, and keep a daily record of what is fed. If it occurs again, we should then be able to isolate any dietary concerns.

: The vet said that Bug was one of the very healthiest and best maintained iguanas she had ever seen, and said she had no reccomendations to change anything we're doing. She even asked if we would be interested in rescuing some of the many she gets calls about looking for homes. Sadly, we are not equipped for large numbers of igs, but we will be a contact point for her and try to place as many as possible. Anyway, it's nice to know that all the money, time, effort are not in vain to keep at least one of these little green critters in good shape.....
