with bad weather coming on in some areas, we need to consider what we'll do if we lose power in our homes.
Here's what we do in VA,
#1. We have an iguana room which is heated, if we lose power, first thing is, we don't open the doors to the room for awhile, this helps keep the warm air in the room for as long as possible.
#2. we use a coleman cook stove to heat water for water bottles. We then fill the bottle with the hot water and rap with a cloth.
#3. If power goes out for more than 24 hours, we take our igs to a motel, using dog carriers.
#4. Have a person who is willing to let your iguanas stay at their house if they haven't lost power at their home. We also have done this, last year in fact.
I would not recommend using kerosine heaters for keeping iguanas warm, fumes would not be good for an iguana. A generator can be used to run a electric space heater if need be.
SIDE NOTE: Everyone should be checking their cages this winter and making sure temps are still high enough for your iguana. IF they are low, adjust your heating systems, higher wattage bulbs or changing thermostat levels. Make sure storm windows are closed on any windows in the iguanas room, if not, they can cause drafts that can lead to health problems with your iguana.
Best wishes,
HD
