Well I have learned my forward approach to getting people to stop buying iguanas is not what iguana "people" like apparently.
For years people have been nice about it. Giving the stores care sheets, anonymously calling the SPCA, "talking" with the owners "suggesting" they dont sell iguanas.
Instead I decided to take a forward bold approach. People need to get the information out there and in the face of pet store owners. If the "nice" way is working and the best way to go why do many of you still have rescue iguanas coming out your ears, that are pet store buys? My solution was to help stop *part* of the problem. Pet stores causing people to have an outlet for impulse buying of iguanas and other exotic pets.
I guess that unless it is suiting everyone, nothing should be done. I am sorry but I expected people to be glad to hear more people speaking out and boldy saying to stop buying baby iguanas.
This kid didn't just come to the forum asking questions about his iguana. He came only DAYS (may 6th) before with his first question saying "I am thinking of getting an iguana" then only a few days (may 9) later he has a brand new pet store baby iguana, that he says he purchased last sunday which happens to be may 6th. And when I tell him how wrong it is, I get told things such as "nothing will ever change" "pet stores will always sell iguanas" isn't it on this forum that people often tell others to research for months before getting a iguana? Yet when I am harsh with him, people say I was too rough.
Well either people are going to have to take action, be bolder, be louder, be ruder if they have too, or people will have to continue taking in sick, hurt, mistreated starving animals that someone bought as an impulse pet store buy.
Yes I know not all rescues are pet stores iguanas. I am just trying to address part of the problem as many of you try and address the education about the iguanas themselves problem.
Yeah sure some pet stores are clean, but if that were the majority, we wouldn't have so many pet store iguanas needed rescue. It's clear that most pet stores DO NOT take proper care of animals, and do not give proper care adive when someone wants to purchase one. Because a few pet stores are clean, all the rest should be able to sell these iguanas in a wrong abusive way to help supply good owners baby iguanas?

Someone said because iguanas are part of the pet trade they will never stop selling them. I find this totally wrong. I remember a long time ago in somewhere California they used to sell these tiny turtles that (apparently) lived in water. When it was decided these turtles were diseased and could carry diseases, it was illegal to sell them. Hence people not buying them. Here in Canada a local township realized people were getting Boas and pythons without knowledge on their care, the snakes would get out and end up hurting someone or dead. Hence they are now illegal there, and have been removed from the pet trade there. It is not impossible!

So I am sorry to offend people with what I said to that kid. But like everyone here on the forum says iguana care takes RESEARCH and a large problem is that people don't read enough before buying an iguana. Much like that kid who bought one the same day he asked his first question, which was a very basic question. People like him are the reason I feel the way I do.
