You can feed junk food to an ig that may not be vitamin packed but that won't be deadly to him down the road. It has only been in the last 5-7 years that it has been discovered that animal protein will damage the kidneys severely. That includes cheese, eggs, cat food, and dog food. Any ig book that has not been revised probably still shows to feed crickets and pinkies.
Back to the ig junk food...funny you mention lettuce. Lettuce is one of Sneakers junk foods. Once in a great while I will give him iceberg lettuce. Never with his regular food, just a few little pieces, fed by hand, when he is out and being a good boy. As you said mainly water, no nutrition, but all its going to do is hydrate him. Come to think about it I don't think he has had that particular treat in 2-3 months. There is also fruits, Sneakers likes bananas & oranges. Some igs go nuts for grains like nutri-grain bars or a piece of wheat bread.
Most all the latest and up-to-date "ig experts" agree that feeding animal protein on a regular basis can shorten the lifespan of your ig in half. Most people who mention feeding animal protein are 5-7 years behind the lastest research. Please go to the sites listed below and read. Give the information to that pet store owner. I'll bet you that every ig book he has in his store is 5 years old or better.
