In Reply to: Abused Boardwalk Igs?? posted by Danny on October 28, 2000 at 22:09:17:
Well in reply to you question about proving abuse. . . Here's my experience with the boardwalk IG's in Wildwood, NJ. I went ther this past summer and well, after reading this enormously long post you will understand why its called abuse.
***SORRY IN ADVANCE FOR THIS L O N G POST***
All along the boardwalk almost every store there was selling baby igunana's cooped up in 1-15 gallon tanks sprawled all over eachother. some iguana's were even being individually displayed in this little plastic containers used for dwarf water frogs (which are only 2cm long). In one store i saw about 10 iguana's which were about 10" if not more in a little hermit crab enclosure! in another store there were 2 iguana's WITH the hermit crabs in the enclosure. these cages were the size of a parakeet cage. Then one vendor had an iguana on an "iguana leash" the poor guy was struggling with all of his might to get away but the man just yanked at the leash and the iguana did a sumersault in the air and landed on the boardwalk stunned. The sight of such poor conditions made me sick. My heart went out to them. And as the story usually goes, I bought Tarzan. He was the healthiest, fiestiest IG in the 20 gallon tank of about 10-15 iguana's. I took him home in a little tank like the one i described earlier. He didnt stay in it for long! the whole carride back to NY he was on my lap, shoulder, or dashboard. looking out the window. The man misinformed me on iguana care and said that the 10 gallon tank that i had at home would last him 3YEARS!!!! and he would reach up to 6 feet in length in about 7 years! when i got home onto the internet i went and read up! I immediately built him a bigger cage and fed him collard, mustard, & dandelion greens. i went to the nearest pet shop and bought vitamin supplement for him. With the better care thati was giving him at my house he grew to the present 15.5" STL within 2 months. when i bought him Tarzan had prominent lateral fold of skin. he was constantly sneezing, when i picked him up from the 10 gallon tank he didnt care, he didnt move. Ibrought him out into the sun everyday while the weather was still warm.
Now he is a beautiful FAT happy IG. I am making plans to build him his permanent enclosure of 6'high, 5' long, and 3' deep. hopefully i wont have to build hima bigger one!
I cant beleive the conditions that those poor IG's were in on that boardwalk. It's absolutely repulsive. How can anyone on God's green earth let this happen? ts just sickening. Hopefully if i go back this upcoming summer, after i give them the low down on how many deaths of these beautiful creatures they are causing, maybe just MAYBE they will ive out the proper information on how much hard work and money they require. maybe the buisness will fall. I bought Tarzan for 6.99!!!!!
how horrible is that? how inhumane are the conditions? how cruel is it to kill precious creatures? all due to the fact that the vendors gave out the wrong information.
