There are 3 types of gangrene: dry, "wet" and gaseous. The one most often seen in reptiles is the dry gangrene. It can occur after an injury or if the tail didn't shed right and the unshed skin grew tighter and tighter until it shut off blood supply to the area. One sign of it is seen in the tip of the tail. It will be very, very dry and look sort of like a dead twig. This is why they break off very easily, too. Feel the entire tail....if there is mushiness just before the twig-like area then infection is very likely and a vet would have to take care of it. This is why after our girl's tip whipped off we continued to feel the end area looking for any too soft places. I still check it for this.
