Well, speaking from experience (13 green iguanas in residence currently) it can be done but with a great deal of observation, caution, and planning. It really depends on the iguanas themselves: some will coexist well, some just won't tolerate it. If you feel you must try to keep two igs together here's a couple guidelines...
1. Never try to keep 2 males together.
2. Never put 2 iguanas together of greatly differing sizes.
3. Make sure each lizard has it's own basking, sleeping, and eating spots.
4. Introduce the iguanas in a neutral territory, never in one of the ig's enclosures.
5. Do a careful inspection of your iguanas daily. Watch for signs of stress, weight loss, bullying behavior.
6. Never assume that if it's working now it will always work. Tomorrow they may decide they don't like each other at all.
I'm sure that I didn't cover everything. I've included a picture that shows the damage that can be done if two male iguanas come into contact with each other. The damage here was not too great but bad enough, and I was responsible because of a moment of carelessness. And not to be a total pessimist on the subject, below you will find a pic of some iguanas that live comfortably together.
