One of my future projects for our website, is to have a section that shows regional differences in iguanas. The above photo is Harry, who is just about 99% pure Mexican. Harry started out having four horns, but due to his, NOT so nice nature, is now left with only one small one.
With regional changes, the farther south you go, the greener iguanas get. Here's a standard list to go by:
Mexican: Browns w/black stripes, very long spikes, silver heads, horns on nose, slimmer bodies.
Central American: Lime greens to bright greens, spikes are long and curve, bodies are still slimmer than South Americans, humped ridge between nose and eyes.
South American: Darker greens w/yellow gold bellies, distances between eyes to nose is shorter, short spikes on back, body is wider.
Note: Iguanas can be mixed between regions, as with Dishy's, that iguana, I would have to say is a mix between a Mexican and Central, since there is a mix of green with the brown color. I see more iguanas that are crossed between these two areas than I do with Central and South American iguanas. The marble mix as I call it, is the easiest way to identify a Mexican/Central American mix.
I believe out of all the different regional iguanas, South American is the most mellow of the bunch and Central being second. Also, as young iglets, you can't tell what sex they are, nor can you tell what region they came from either, since they are all a standard green when they're hatchlings. We have two South American iguanas, both are just great kids. Our Central American iguana is OK, but she just as soon be left alone than be around humans. Then there's Harry, holding Harry is like holding a croc.....he's flat out mean, 24/7.
Anyway, as soon as I have the web information up, I'll post here and let everyone know, it will have photos and information on the different regions and explaining the differences in them.
Hope this helps.
