: plus I hit enter too soon. The monitor forum gets slammed all the time with trolls and people that don't want to learn. If someone shows genuine concern, then they're all over it. Also Andy is actually a decent guy but he gets sick of hearing how someone killed their savannah because they weren't maintaining it properly, the same as the iguana people get frustrated with the guy that feeds mainly monkey chow!
: I would never suggest letting a monitor free-roam alongside a free-roaming iguana, they're very territorial and like to eat a lot :) If you want suggestions on free-roaming monitors, you should look for "Nessie's mom" on the monitor forum, she has a humongous Nile that roams all thru her house. She's also very nice. As for what type, monitors vary greatly in temperament, size, and requirements. Check out varanid.net for info, it's a great site.
: good luck!!
: : It's not that they're mean, they're very territorial, like igs and cycluras.
: : A cyclura is capable to kill an ig as much as a monitor.
: : Also, monitors are carnivores, igs herbivores.
: : If you must, you can separate their territories, or have them free-roam at different hours. Igs tend to stay up top, while terrestrial monitors hardly do climb (such as sav's). But mangroves, white-throats, and young waters' can and will.
: : Dumerils are extremely docile, and they only get to be 3.5-4.5 feet long. Highly recommended for the novice!
: : The warnings about the monitor forum are a bit correct, but they're not that mean, as long as you dont sound like a 12 year old "me too" spoiled child. "Andy" is famous for causing problems, so just ignore his pesky remarks as many do.
: : Ask for the link to DANIEL BENNET's Monitors Book.
: : It contains good info, or buy for $5 R.D. Barlett's "Monitors & Tegus" @ Amazon.com
: : In my own humble opinion, monitors are more "cool" than igs, for their hyper activity, and incredible intelligence, especially the Aussie ones (no offense to fellow ig owners!).
: : However, they bite harder, whip harder, and COST A LOT more to feed (bugs, pinkies and rats, not for the squeamish!).
: : STUDY STUDY! RESEARCH RESEARCH! Then think about it.
: : I would spend those $5 on that small book. It's not too old, and has lotsa good info.
: : Good luck!
:
: : : I WAS THINKING ABOUT BUYING A MONITOR FROM THE LOCAL PET SOTRE BUT I FIGURED THEY WERE TO MEAN TO FREE ROAM AND I DONT HAVE A BIG ENOUGH CAGE FROM HIM THE ONE AT THE STORE IS WAY TO SMALL WHAT CAN U TELL ME ABOUT THEM,?????
