free roaming is very tricky. melissa k has a good site on that and many of your other questions. especially about heating and lighting, too. gaining a new iguana to the home, means a lot of reading ahead for your family. there are lots of different views about raising these beauties...on lots of different sites.
i use the Zoo Med iguana 5.0 florescent lighting for the uvb, plus direct exposure to the sun, when the weather cooperates in iowa. please read up at melissa's site about this type of lighting. and i use reg. household light bulbs for the heating during the day. with the wattage decided by the cage size, to maintain correct temps for basking. and at night, i usually dont have to use a light, the temps can go down to 70 or so. but if it is an extremely cold night, i use a dark party bulb from hardware store. it does the same thing as the expensive iguana bulbs do with half the cost.
enjoy your new found friend, and give him the best gift of all....your knowledge of reading all you can get your hands on. you wont be disappointed. take care

: We finally got our iggy home today. He is beautiful! I'm already in love with him. And he's a strong little guy! With sharp claws to boot. We trimmed his nails today, but I still consider them lethal weapons. :)
: But to the point. We let him free roam at the moment. I put up a basking spot for him. He was a bit stubborn at first, but once he tried it he stayed there for a while and really seemed to enjoy it. Right now I'm just using an ESU incandescent bulb with a reflector, and I'm wondering what I should use for UVB. Should I just get another reflector with a UVB bulb and put them both in the same place? Should I use fluorescents?
: I'm also wondering about nighttime heating. Can I just use the same reflector with another bulb? If so, what kind should I get?
: I've read through tons of information on iguana heating and lighting, but all I've gathered is that they need heat, light, UVB, and nighttime heating. But when I go to the pet store, they have hundreds of bulbs and fluorescents and whatnot. I'm just at a loss as to what I should pick.
: I'm also wondering if there will be any problems getting him to sleep under the heat source if we let him free roam.
