iguana colors

Hello! I recently rescued a 3 1/2 foot female Ig. My question is this. Is there something special that is done to improve the coloring of these animals? She is very healthy and eats very well. She is however very drab colored. Mostly gray with some bright green on her sides near her belly. I am not trying to change her from natural I am just wondering if the previous owner (whoever that was) was not feeding her properly or if the coloring is strictly random on each different family or sub species? Also how often do these animals shed?
