: About two weeks ago I went to a petstore downtown to check on the price of the reptisun 5.0 bulbs for our new cage. I was talking to the owner and I just casually asked, "You guys don't sell Iguana's do you?" He replied that he stopped because you have to buy so many at once and his specialty is mainly fish. (I then gave a little cheer and told him that was wonderful!) But he said he had one that a lady had dumped on him the previous week. Well, I asked to see the little guy. When I saw him he was in a 10 gallon aquarium with NO substrate or carpet or anything, the food dish had rotten lettuce and fruit and there were fruit flies all over the little guy. There was no lighting or heat and keep in mind that the weather was starting to get cool at night.
: So, I said..."Can I please hold this little guy?" and proceeded to tell him about the diet and all. I felt pretty stupid telling a pet store owner about proper care of an Ig, especially since I'm still green around the collar. But I begged him to get him under some light and heat and feed him the right diet.
: As I was holding the little fella, he decided to come out of his little stupor and take a flying leap so it was quite interesting trying to catch the poor thing. I was kinda ticked because the owner had just finished telling me that this lady had dumped the Ig on him, yet there was a sign on the cage that said $25!
: It was so hard to walk out of there, but before going I said, "Look, if he get's sick or you decide you can't sell him and want to do the right thing, give me a call." I left my number.
: So... I made an excuse to go back about three days later and the man wasn't there, but there was a girl there. I didn't see the little guy in the front so I asked if he'd been sold. She said no, they'd moved him. They had finally put some proper food and some kind of wood chips on the floor. They also had him under what looked like a UVB lamp. I said to the girl "What's the least he'll take for this little guy?" She came back and said $20. I told her I thought that was pretty tacky considering he didn't pay a dime for him. Anyway, I was a little relieved to see that at least he was getting better care. The flies were all gone, etc.
: So....it's been almost two weeks since that day. I decided to call yesterday. The little guy is still there. I told her to write my number down again and let her owner know that I'd be willing to take him in and that if anyone else brings their iguana in to please call if they need a temp home.
: My point is...I really want to be involved in helping out but I'm not qualified to "rescue" so to speak. Eventually that might be an option, but right now I don't think so. I know though, that I could give good care temporarily. Is there anyone that lives near Goldsboro, NC that would be willing to help out in an emergency situation? Or maybe an organization close by? I kinda jumped the gun but volunteering my services. Let me know your thoughts Please. Thanks(Gee....I think I'm becoming a fanatic about these gorgeous creatures!)J
