dechlorinating drops

do dechlorinating drops need to be added to ig water? i've never used with my ig (i do with my frogs and other herps) and never thought they were needed but a saw a post saying they were being used with someone's ig. so are they necessary? and if they are and aren't used, what can happen? thanks!
