EXPRESS & ECHO (Exeter, UK) 06 October 00 Reptilian database is set up
An Echo appeal to find homes for two iguanas was so successful that the RSPCA has started a database of potential reptile owners.
The two giant lizards could well have been put down if the Echo had not put out an appeal for new homes.
The Devon RSPCA has no facilities for looking after reptiles, so in the past, if homes couldn't be found, they have had to be destroyed.
But, as a result of the appeal, so many people have come forward to offer the iguanas homes, that the RSPCA is compiling a database of people wanting to give homes to reptiles.
The female iguana, Miss Moneypenny, was re-homed with Exmouth teenager Andrei Burton.
The 14-year-old knows all about reptiles ? he shares his bedroom with 11.
A friend of his saw the iguana appeal in the Express & Echo and knew he would be interested.
Andrei already had a vivarium for keeping the animals and when RSPCA inspector Len Rankin did a home check, he was very impressed by the boy's knowledge.
His mum, Marguerite Burton, said: "Andrei knows a lot about reptiles. I think he even taught the RSPCA inspector a few things."
Miss Moneypenny is the newest addition to a collection of reptiles that includes a monitor lizard, geckos, a boa constrictor, rainbow snakes, several water dragons and a chameleon
Mrs Burton describes their meal times as a messy affair, and a part of the family freezer has been given over to storing dead mice to feed to the snake.
Iggy, the male iguana, has been found a home in Topsham.
Unsurprisingly, he is now much happier without the female companion who had chewed off four inches from his tail.
Anyone interested in offering a home to a reptile should telephone the RSPCA on 08705 555 999.
