EXPRESS & ECHO (Exeter, UK) 27 September 00 Mini-dragons in need of a home
Two green iguanas are in desperate need of homes as their owner is no longer able to keep them.
The RSPCA cannot take them in, as it has no facilities for keeping reptiles at its Devon shelters.
If a home is not found for them soon, they may have to be put to sleep, as has been the case with other iguanas in the past.
The reptiles, which look like miniature dragons are over three foot long, originate from the forests of South America and are likely to grow another foot before they reach maturity.
Although the pair are currently kept together, they need separate enclosures as the female has been known to bite the tail of the male.
Due to their size, they need an area at least three foot by six foot, which is warm and has objects for them to climb over, mimicking their natural environment. Specialist fluorescent bulbs are also needed, to synthesise the sun, which helps them to produce enough calcium to keep their bones healthy and strong.
Iguanas require a diet consisting of a variety of fresh fruit, vegetables, and meat.
Anyone who is interested in offering the reptiles a home should telephone the RSPCA on 08705 555999.
