THE PROVENCE (Vancouver, British Columbia) 01 October 00 Love a sensual bath for two? OK (Stuart Derdeyn)
Leapin' lizards!
While there's no denying the rewards of volunteering, a recent posting by the Rainforest Reptile Refuge Society in Surrey would make many reconsider community service.
The non-profit society, which cares for 300 unwanted and abandoned scaley housepets, is looking for specialized cleaners. Iguana washers to be exact.
There are more than 100 of the large-size critters at the refuge. Why so many?
"People keep on buying them as pets, forgetting that a mature iguana grows to be about two feet in length," says refuge director Clarence Schramm. "That's usually when they'll start to whip, bite and scratch and when we get the calls from owners wanting to unload them.
"These are social animals, who get stressed out on their own. Company, and a good bath, really helps in the healing process."
Awww, cute. But just a little dab behind the ears and under the nails before dinny-dins isn't exactly what's in store for brave bathers. Stressed-out iguanas often have mites, open sores, and even healthy ones have really bad aim when they void.
"In nature, they regularly take dips to clean that sort of mess off," says Schramm. "We'd like to get them a pool for that reason."
In the meantime, a regular sponge bath will have to do. Unfortunately, one of the regular washers is moving --so a vacancy is open. Training is given to all candidates. If you're the scrubber for the job, call Christine at 538-1711.
"You can't just go in and bathe an iguana," says Schramm. Right, there was that previous whip, bite and scratch mention.
The Rainforest Reptile Refuge Society (1295 176th St., Surrey) is open to the public Friday through Sunday, 10:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Tix: $4.50 adults, $3.95 srs/sts, $2.95 children under 12. Pre-booked group tours are possible on Tuesdays and Friday.
