What i did, was to first figure out how long it took for the food to be "let out".
The smaller the animal, the sooner it'll poop.
So if you find out that your ig takes a nice sh...uh, poop, an hour or two after feeding, then you have to be ready.

Example:
12:pm lunch
2:pm potty.

so, around 2pm, you should study your ig for any signs of potential defecation activity. Looking around, raising of tail, etc. (look at him the first time, so you'll reco. the movements for the next time).
As soon as it wants to go, place it on the potty (litter, box, corner, whatever), and let him go.
By the way, iguanas respond well to luke-warm water to defecate. After the deed, give him a treat and "congratule" it.

Repeat on and on, until he connects the treat with pooping in that potty.

What i did, was make a litter box with babywipes in the bottom. Soni would go in, get stimulated by the wetness, and poop. Easy to clean, and the wipes cover the smell a bit. If i catch him, i give him a treat to preserve the connection.

It will take you a while, but it'll be worth it.
A potty-trained ig leads to free-roaming, which leads to a happier animal.

Good luck!
