....I dunno. I agree with the points made, however...IMHO:
1. I hear it repeated over and over again "I am not a vet", "I have no veternary training" etc.
2. There are many posts suggesting to see a vet ASAP.
3. Any regular poster here has more ig knowledge than the three vets I have access to put together, and they are listed as 'herp' vets on the list.
4. Just because someone is a licenced vet does NOT necessarily mean that they have the special knowledge of reptiles needed to help igs. In fact, it could be detrimental if they've looked at outdated resources. This is worse, because they have that air of confidence because they believe they know what they're doing. How many times do we hear of vets treating igs for their natural intestinal 'infestations'? The list goes on as we know, and I think it only proper that ANY doctor's advice be questioned - whether for humans OR igs. I would hate to think people here would be discouraged from posting "My vet says .....what do you all think?"
5. My respect for the knowledge on the forum comes not from 'liking' people or assuming they know it all - but from the common sense and experience they have and use, that far exceeds what most vets have. You can't learn common sense and/or 'knowing' ig behaviour from a book. The published knowledge base of Herp vet information on igs is just not large enough yet for me personally to trust. If we were talking about my cats..... that would be different. I'd strongly discourage anything that sounds like medical advice...because there ARE qualified vets out there - everywhere. This is simply just not the case for igs. As long as it is perfectly clear that "X" worked for *one* iguana, whose difficulties were known and documented...in a controlled environment etc. then I want to hear it!! I am then able to make my own choices in the future as to whether the vet advice sounds right. For my money, and my baby's life - if I had advice from the most famous vet in the world.... I would still bounce that advice off the people here.
6. This forum is for support and opinions, and they should not be held back. To me, the line not to cross is if the advice being given sounds like you are giving it as a qualified vet and recommending a form of treatment without a qualified diagnosis and not discussed first with the vet. Maybe the vet didn't think of it, or never heard of it.
7. My only regret is that I did not have this forum when I went to the vet with problems. The answer was simple -- I have heard it here many times. But the poor soul is dead...and you people would have saved her. She died post-op after a full hysterectomy (egg bound for days) from being kept at 72 degrees ("that's okay, it will slow down her metabolism") and even though she was frisky and running around they kept grabbing her and trying to shove food down her throat ("she can go home after she eats"). She wasn't a mammal!! Forty-eight hours of all that stress did her in. The forum would have saved her. I can't prove her cuase of death - but I know it was all the combined stress. When I visited her she was recuperating just fine...and 24 hours later she should have gone home to her own (heated!!)environment. Any medical emergency and she could have been back within 20 minutes at any hour of the day or night.
8. I want that freedom to know, that if I have a problem - EVERYONE here will jump in with their 2 cents worth - and CALL it their uneducated 2 cents worth, with no holds barred. Many heads are better than one!
8. I have a hard time with this 'suing' stuff. That is, I think, mayber a cultural difference of the US and Canada. A case like "I followed your advice and my ig died' would be tossed out of court. It is still your choice to follow it or not follow it. If it is important enough that you would want financial recompense...then it would have irresponsible of you to not research for yourself and get a qualified herp vet. So it is hard for me to understand that thinking - really! I can't quite grasp it -- unless the person was pretending to be or know what he/she was not, or was being malicious. There are too many knowledgable people on the forum for even that to slip by I think.
Bottom line for me - if Iggy is sick - she needs you guy's help for sure!! That's the main reason I'm here. (And to keep tabs on how IZ is doing of course :o)!!!)
